Heute sind wir zu Besuch im Weihrauchland, wie die an den Jemen angrenzende Provinz Dhufar im Südoman bezeichnet wird. Weihrauch wächst auf 2 bis 3 Meter hohen Büschen, den Boswelia Sacra, deren Rinde im Frühjahr angeschnitten wird um die austretenden Harztropfen nach einigen Wochen zu ernten, zu trocknen und in die ganze Welt zu verschicken. Nur in diesem Gebiet im Südoman und im nahe angrenzenden Jeman wächst dieser Strauch, der das trocken-feuchte Wüstenklima benötigt um Harz zu bilden und der auch nicht kultiviert werden kann. Neben Myrrhe und Gold als eines der 3 Mitbringsel der “Heiligen Drei Könige” zeigt das schon  den Stellenwert dieses seltenen Gutes.

Wunderbare kilometerlange Sandstrände und eine mit Wadis durchzogenes gebirgiges Hinterland kennzeichen dieses Land. Wir fahren durch eine ganz eigenartige Steinwüstenlandschaft, die sich jedoch in den 3 Monaten des Südwestmonsuns von Ende Juni bis Anfang September in eine blühende und grünende Hügellandschaft verwandelt. Kein Wunder daß zu dieser Zeit die Menschen das kühle Naß mit einem riesigen monatelangen und nach dem Regen benanntes Khareef-Fest feiern.

Der herrschende Sultan Qaboos hat zwar in der Hauptstadt Muscat seinen Repräsentationspalast, er wohnt aber in seinem sehr großzügig angelegten und anmutigen Palast in Salalah. Wie im ganzen Land merkt man die sehr bewußt in Infrastruktur, Bildung und Weiterentwicklung des Landes ausgegebenen Ölmilliarden. Der Sultan führte die Schulpflicht ein und fördert die Lust auf ein Studium auch heute noch durch ein zusätzliches Taschengeld für jeden Studenten. Steuern gibt es keine und für Benzin zahlt man mit 45 EUR-Cent weniger als für 1 Liter Mineralwasser das 50 Euro-Cent kostet.

Ein wunderbares, sicheres Land, in das wir gerne wiederkommen würden um den Norden und das Landesinnere auch noch zu sehen. Jetzt geht es erst einmal die jemenitische Küste entlang durch den Golf von Aden in Richtung Rotes Meer
